Perhaps this will help....
"Now the word used in Scripture for this attitude is fear. As our quotation from Isaiah 8:13 (KJV) says, "Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread." This is no slavish, cowering emotion, but the healthy attitude of awe and reverence which befits the holiness of God. It is the reverence and godly fear which the writer of Hebrews sees as a necessary accompaniment of the kind of service God requires (Hebews 12:28 KJV). If holiness is the supreme attribute of God, then reverence must be correspondingly paramount in his people's attitude toward him. This reverence has been significantly defined by the psychologist William McDougall as "the religious emotion par excellence; few merely human powers are capable of exciting reverence, this blend of wonder, fear, gratitude, and negative self-feeling."
Now the fear of the Lord has a great deal to do with the way in which a Christian lives. Paul, for example, urges us to "make holiness perfect in the fear of God" (2 Cor. 7:1). The book of Proverbs teaches the practical importance of fearing God, as the following quotations demonstrate:
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. (1:7)
The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. (8:13)
In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence. (14:26)
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life. (14:27)
By the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil. (16:6)
Yet the importance of reverence and fear toward God in relation to sanctification is not always recognized. Surely one of the reasons in these day s for low moral standards is the lack of awareness of the majesty and holiness of God and for our accountability toward him. To a certain degree the same deficiencies can be seen among professing Christians. One of the marks of spiritual decline is that "there is no fear of the God before his eyes" (Psalm 36:1). Instead we fill ourselves with confidence in our own sufficiency. This is the complete antithesis of holiness." (Kenneth Prior, "The Way of Holiness", pgs. 20-21)
