I got "knowing scripture" by R.C. Sproul

I'm tempted to get "how to read the bible for all its worth" by Gordon Fee
but he promotes TNIV and dynamic equivlance translation....... not feelin' it

Still lookin' for a book that will do more hand holdin' through the scriptures.

I was wondering about the Gordon Fee thing, but I'm with you concerning the TNIV. If you thought the NIV was liberal, take a look at the TNIV. I want a literal, not liberal translation.

NIV is okay .. if you really really need something easy to read ... but TNIV is garbage ... don't even go near it except to sprinkle holy water and watch it sizzle
Neutral

whats good chema?

I started reading the NIV when I first got saved. It was easy to read and its what my pastor recommended. But as I grew more in the Word and desired to extract the richness of every text, I found that different translations are more literal than others. From suggestions on the HCR board a while ago, I got myself a MacArthur Study Bible in NASB. It was more of a word-for-word type of translation which is good for bible studies. I also got the Reformation bible in ESV. I think both try to keep the original text/meaning as much as possible, so its what I chose. Both are still easy to read also. Honestly, I haven't touched my NIV bible since I picked up the Johnny Mac and Reformation bibles.

Fam, I have the Gordon Fee book. It's not that bad. I would say it's good for starting out. You could probably get through it in a couple of days. If you are looking for something more academic than it might be a little too light.
